POPLARVILLE — The U.S. Postal Service says construction of Poplarville’s new post office is in its final stages, marking the latest milestone in the effort to establish a permanent postal facility.
USPS previously projected the new facility would open in April 2026. The agency has not announced a revised opening date or explained why the project extended beyond that target.
The new post office inside the former Ramey’s shopping center on South Main Street appears nearly complete from the outside, although USPS orders Debra Jean Fetterly said interior construction remains underway.
“We look forward to opening the new Poplarville Post Office,” Fetterly said. “We will provide additional details as we move closer to completion.”
The latest update comes after RHCJC News reported in October 2025 that USPS expected the new facility to open this spring. A follow-up story in December 2025 found construction had not yet begun despite that projection.
Poplarville has relied on a temporary Mobile Retail Unit since January 2022 after the city’s post office closed because of extensive termite damage and structural issues.
Mayor Louise Smith said the former post office building has been listed for sale, although the city is not eligible to purchase the property.
Fetterly said USPS is also continuing to evaluate the future of the original post office building.
“Regarding the previous construction, the Postal Service is still determining next steps, following established procedures,” she said.
Until the permanent facility opens, USPS encourages customers to continue using the Mobile Retail Unit outside the former post office at 301 S. Main St. for retail services, including mailing letters and shipping packages.
