Neighbor Notes

  • Hattiesburg National Poetry Month Celebration and Young Poets Awards held from 1 to 3 p.m. April 25 at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center in Hattiesburg The free event celebrates young poets and artists from across the city. Beginning at 1 p.m., attendees can enjoy creative games, activities, snacks, and an exhibition of award-winning poetry by young writers. At 2 p.m., a poetry reading and awards ceremony will recognize outstanding writers from each school, and one grand prize winner will receive a scholarship to the Young Authors Academy summer 2026. Students, teachers, and families who participated in Hattiesburg Poet Laureate Jennifer Peterson’s Writing Sky Words workshop series during the 2025-26 school year are especially encouraged to attend.
  • Lewis Lights held nightly from 5:30 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31 in Purvis The long-running holiday light display features approximately 200,000 lights and hundreds of handmade wooden yard pieces and is free to visit, with donations accepted.

  • Gingerbread Bash held from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 19 in Oak Grove The free, family-friendly event hosted by Calvary Baptist Church features gingerbread-themed activities and holiday fun for children and families.
  • Winter Solstice Storytime held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 23 at the Oak Grove Public Library The children’s program includes seasonal stories, songs, rhymes, games, and a craft activity and is designed for preschool-aged children, though all ages are welcome.

Lamar County schools earn military designation

The designation comes through the Mississippi Department of Education’s Military Star Schools Program, which began in 2022 to help military children who often face frequent school transitions.
