Student Jobs

Student workers play an essential role in the success of the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center.

The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center is dedicated to training the next generation of media professionals. We offer paid, part-time positions and internships for high school, community college and university students interested in media careers. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience and may also qualify for class credit. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Current Hiring Status

We are not currently accepting applications for paid roles. If you would like to be considered for future paid opportunities, please complete the interest form. You will be among the first to hear about upcoming openings for paid roles.

We can always work with volunteers or University of Southern Mississippi students interested in internships — whether for class credit or not. For more information about volunteer and Southern Miss intern positions, contact Nichole Cyprian by email at [email protected].

About Our Positions

Most student workers at the center work up to 20 hours per week. Interns are limited to 19 hours per week. All paid roles earn $12 per hour, and applicants must be at least 16 years old at the time of hire. Students work in the following areas:

Southern Miss Roles

University of Southern Mississippi students — especially those majoring or minoring in media and communication or related fields — are encouraged to apply. Opportunities may include paid positions or internships that qualify for class credit, depending on the role and the needs of the student. To apply for paid positions or internships, students will need a resume, work samples and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

High School & Community College Roles

We work with high schools and community colleges across Mississippi to offer part-time positions and internships. One requirement for high school and community college student participation is successful completion of the Introduction to Community Journalism course.

Other University Students

We welcome students from other Mississippi and out-of-state universities to apply for part-time positions and internships. Depending on the policies of the other institution, internships may be eligible for class credit.
