LAMAR — The City of Hattiesburg, alongside eight government and community organizations, is hosting its annual Right Way to Throw Away Day on May 2 to help residents properly dispose of hazardous household items.
The event is partially funded by grants from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two drop-off locations: the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center and Bobby L. Chain Municipal Airport.
Items eligible for drop-off include pesticides, paint and paint thinner, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals, bleach, ammonia, computers and TVs.
Additionally, shredding services for sensitive documents and prescription waste disposal will be available only at the Bobby L. Chain Municipal Airport location.
Ammunition, explosives, medical waste, syringes, radioactive materials, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and commercial waste will not be accepted.
This service will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the truck is full.
Rather than taking up excessive space at a drop-off location, organizers encourage residents to dispose of dried-out and cured paint cans in a regular curbside trash can.
A full list of eligible and ineligible items can be found on Lamar County’s Facebook page about the event and on the City of Hattiesburg’s event website.
