PETAL — The Petal Mayor’s Youth Council will host Pick Up Petal Day from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 3, continuing an annual community cleanup effort that began in 2021.
Participants are asked to meet at Hinton Park at 8:30 a.m. before the cleanup begins. According to information shared by the Petal Area Chamber of Commerce, buckets will be available while supplies last, and organizers encourage people to bring a grabber if they have one.
Petal Mayor Tony Ducker, who helped start the event in 2021, said a cleaner city benefits everyone.
“Cleanliness is the welcome mat. It just says a lot about what kind of town we want to be,” Ducker said.
Lowe’s of Petal is sponsoring the event and helping provide supplies, including buckets, grabbers and 45 safety vests.
Ducker said residents can also help reduce litter through small, everyday habits, such as keeping a trash bag in the car and throwing trash away at gas stations or other stops.
“Hopefully we get the message out that we don’t have to have days like this going forward. It continues to be somewhat of a problem, not just in Petal, but really statewide,” Ducker said.
Organizers said the event is open to everyone and encouraged residents to bring a friend and help keep Petal clean.
