JACKSON — Jackson County has installed three donation boxes at the Seaman Road Landfill in an effort to reduce waste and give usable household items a second life.
County officials said the boxes allow residents to donate gently used items that might otherwise be thrown away, helping divert materials from the landfill while supporting local organizations
The donation boxes were placed at the landfill to make it easier for residents to give away items during regular trips to dispose of waste.
Items collected from the boxes will go to America’s Thrift Store and Home of Grace, two organizations that operate thrift stores and recovery programs in the region.
Residents may donate gently used clothing, cookware and small household appliances in the collection boxes.
County officials said the effort is part of a broader goal to reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill and extend the life of the facility.
Illegal dumping and improper waste disposal can also create health and environmental risks, according to county officials.
The Seaman Road Landfill is classified as a Class I and Class II landfill and accepts materials including asphalt, furniture, concrete and natural vegetation.
Hazardous materials such as aerosols, gasoline, pool cleaners and motor oil are not accepted at the landfill. However, those items will be accepted during the county’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on May 9.
Jackson County also offers a drop-off-only electronic waste recycling facility where residents can bring items including computers, cellphones and battery backups.
County officials said the donation program is designed to benefit both the environment and community organizations that provide services to people in need.
Residents can access the landfill free of charge if they present a valid Jackson County car tag.
