  • Hattiesburg National Poetry Month Celebration and Young Poets Awards held from 1 to 3 p.m. April 25 at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center in Hattiesburg The free event celebrates young poets and artists from across the city. Beginning at 1 p.m., attendees can enjoy creative games, activities, snacks, and an exhibition of award-winning poetry by young writers. At 2 p.m., a poetry reading and awards ceremony will recognize outstanding writers from each school, and one grand prize winner will receive a scholarship to the Young Authors Academy summer 2026. Students, teachers, and families who participated in Hattiesburg Poet Laureate Jennifer Peterson’s Writing Sky Words workshop series during the 2025-26 school year are especially encouraged to attend.
  • Victorian Candlelit Christmas held from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 in downtown Hattiesburg The annual holiday tradition invites visitors to stroll through downtown and the Historic Hattiesburg Neighborhood, touring select historic homes illuminated by candlelight and seasonal décor.
  • Lights of the Wild at the Hattiesburg Zoo held Dec. 5–7, 12–14, and 19–23 in Hattiesburg The annual holiday light event features illuminated animal displays, festive décor, photos with Santa, themed activities for children, train and carousel rides, and seasonal treats. The event runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and was named one of USA Today’s Top 10 Best Zoo Lights in 2024.
  • At the Movies: Christmas Edition held at 9:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. Dec. 21 at Venture Church in Hattiesburg The family-friendly holiday event includes a free showing of a classic Christmas film, complimentary popcorn and drinks, festive décor, Christmas music, photo booths, and interactive activities focused on the meaning of the season.
  • “We the People” a play about the Preamble and a salute to Veterans held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. June 16 at VFW Post 3036 in Hattiesburg Legacy Actors Theatre Experience, South Mississippi’s only award-winning senior readers theatre group, is producing a live stage play as a Festival South extra event. The 11 a.m. show is geared toward senior adults, with free admission for those 65 and older. The 6 p.m. general public performance features tickets at $20. The play explores the meanings behind the Preamble to the Constitution and recognizes local veterans.
  • Forrest County Farmer’s Market held every Wednesday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at 1200 Corinne St., Hattiesburg The market features locally grown produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, and specialty items from area farmers and artisans. Attendees can interact with vendors, learn about sustainable agriculture, and enjoy family-friendly activities.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing and Health Professions is partnering with Forrest Health, allowing nursing students to gain work experience at Forrest General while earning their degrees.
