PEARL RIVER COUNTY — Puttin’ On The Pink Breast Cancer Foundation has announced that its 15th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Gala will be held Sept. 26 at The Venue at River Oaks in Picayune. Tickets for the annual fundraiser go on sale Aug. 1.
Founded in 2012, Puttin’ On The Pink is a nonprofit breast cancer awareness organization that helps eligible people who live or work in Pearl River County pay for mammograms, diagnostic testing and treatment-related expenses. The organization also provides gas cards to help patients travel to and from treatment.
From 2018 through 2022, Pearl River County averaged about 53 new invasive breast cancer diagnoses each year, according to the National Cancer Institute’s State Cancer Profiles. The county’s diagnosis rate was similar to Mississippi’s overall rate during that period.
Turnage said the gala is the organization’s largest fundraiser and allows it to continue providing assistance to local residents.
“It is (important) because all of the funds that are raised locally stay locally,” Turnage said. “It doesn’t necessarily happen with some of the bigger corporations and larger breast cancer foundations. It’s hard to see that money trickle down to some of the rural counties and cities.”
The formal event typically draws about 250 attendees and will feature dinner, a silent auction and live music.
People who live or work in Pearl River County and need assistance can apply through the organization’s website.
