HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The city of Hattiesburg has advanced from Class 8 to Class 7 in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Rating System, a voluntary program that rewards communities for exceeding federal floodplain management standards. Beginning April 1, 2026, most property owners with flood insurance policies through the National Flood Insurance Program will receive a 15% discount on their premiums. Mayor Toby Barker credited the achievement to years of work by multiple departments, noting it reflects both tangible savings for residents and progress in infrastructure and floodplain management. The improved rating stems from upgraded stormwater and drainage systems, preservation of open spaces in flood-prone areas, public education campaigns, and stricter development standards in flood zones. Officials remind residents that flooding is the city’s most common natural hazard and can occur outside mapped flood zones, and that most homeowners’ insurance does not cover flood damage. The city encourages residents to know their flood risk, maintain clear storm drains, follow permitting requirements for floodplain properties, and avoid flooded areas. Preserving natural floodplain areas benefits public safety, property protection, and water quality across the Leaf River watershed.
