Posts on TikTok and other social media platforms claim that T.J. Maxx will close all of its stores worldwide on Sept. 23, 2025.
This claim is false.
T.J. Maxx and its parent company, TJX Companies Inc., are reporting growth and expansion, with no evidence of mass closures.
Read the fact-check below to get the full picture on T.J.Maxx’s earnings and how to spot disinformation online:
The “What Is True?” team received a screenshot of a now-deleted TikTok post that appeared to be written by T.J. Maxx “management.” It claimed all stores would close on Sept. 23, 2025, and thanked customers for a “wonderful journey.” The post quickly spread, gaining hundreds of thousands of likes and inspiring copycat videos.
In reality, neither T.J. Maxx nor TJX Companies has issued such an announcement. Around the time the rumor circulated, TJX published earnings for the second quarter of its 2026 fiscal year, which ended Aug. 2, 2025. According to a news release from the company, “For the first half of Fiscal 2026, net sales were $27.5 billion, an increase of 6% versus the first half of Fiscal 2025. First half Fiscal 2026 consolidated comparable sales increased 4%.”
In short, TJX earned more in the first half of 2025 than during the same period in 2024, and the company continues to grow. Nasdaq also reported TJX is considering opening as many as 1,800 new stores long term. There is no evidence of widespread closures.
TJX did not respond to a request for comment.
How to spot misinformation about store closures:
— Check the grammar. The viral post contained errors professional PR teams would not make.
— Check the source. Major announcements appear on a company’s official website or verified social media, not TikTok alone.
— Watch for sensational language. False posts often use dramatic wording to drive engagement, while real announcements are measured and detailed.
