Student Jobs

A key mission of the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center is to train the next generation of media professionals. We invite high school, community college, and university students — preferably those with an interest in media or a major or minor in communication — to apply for paid, part-time positions at the center, and we also offer, under certain circumstances, positions that offer class credit. Volunteers interested in finding their niche in the media sector are also welcome to apply.
ABOUT OUR POSITIONS
— These are part-time positions (up to 20 hours per week).
— All paid positions earn $12 an hour.
— Positions include reporter, digital specialist, strategic communicator, photographer and videographer, researcher, and web developer.
— Student workers must be at least 16 years old at time of hire.
SOUTHERN MISS STUDENTS
University of Southern Mississippi students (preferably those with a major or minor in communication or a related field) may apply for employment using this application. These positions may be paid or may qualify for internship class credit.
HIGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS
We work with various southeast Mississippi high schools and community colleges to offer paid positions or class credit. One requirement for high school and community college student employment is successful completion of the university’s Introduction to Community Journalism class. For more information, contact Dr. Edgar Simpson, director of the Southern Miss School of Media and Communication, at 601-266-4014 or by email at [email protected]. Students who have successfully completed the class can apply for employment through the university’s careers portal.
STUDENTS FROM OTHER MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITIES
The center welcomes student interns with majors or minors in communication or related fields from other Mississippi universities. These positions may be paid or may qualify for internship class credit. These applications, which will be available through the university’s careers portal, will open in April 2025. For more information, contact Nichole Cyprian, center director, at 601-266-5166 or by email at [email protected].
